Year 11 Holiday Work - Week 1

Week 1 - Friday 27th March - Friday 2nd April
This revision schedule is designed to help you by directing you towards certain activities on certain days.

Try to keep to this schedule and the suggested times for each activity.

I suggest you buy and use a new A4 Notebook, exclusively for all your English revision.

Remember, you cannot do this properly in front of your computer or the television...and turn off your ipod and mobile too whilst you´re at it!

Tom and Rory, use Week 1 to revise for your other subjects. Everything from Week 2 onwards is also relevant to you, so please do it.

Friday 26th - Start as you mean to go on!
20 mins: Re-read "Storm on the Island" - write down a single sentence description of what Heaney´s intention was when writing the poem and then jot down 5 techniques within the poem that are used to support that intention.
15 mins:List 3 other poems you might choose to compare with this poem and in diagrammatical form show the links between these poems.

Saturday 27th
35 mins: Re-read "Mid-Term Break" (Remember this is not a "starred" poem but you can still use it for comparison with a named poem, in the exam.) Then using the following sentence as your opening, write the next 100 words, "Mid-Term break is a powerfully moving poem because...."
20 mins: Start re-reading "Of Mice and Men" - remember to always think about characters, themes and techniques used by Steinbeck. Always keep your A4 pad handy to jot down any notes that come to mind.

Sunday 28th
40 mins: Re-read "Death of A Naturalist" and "At A Potato Digging". In 2 columns, make a bullet point list of all the different ways nature is presented in each poem. These could take the form of single word quotes or your own observations as you work through the poem.
20 mins Continue reading "Of Mice and Men".

Monday 29th
30 mins: Re-read "Digging", "Catrin", "On My First Sonne" and "The Affliction of Margaret"
1 hour: Complete the following essay: Compare the ways these poems present family relationships.
20 mins: Continue reading "Of Mice and Men".

Tuesday 30th
35 mins: Re-read "The Field-Mouse", "Easter 1998" and "Cold Knapp Lake". Write approximately 100 words on the following question:Compare the ways, and why Clarke uses actual events in these 3 poems.
20 mins: Continue reading "Of Mice and Men".

Wednesday 31st
Complete reading of "Of Mice and Men".

Thursday 1st April

50mins: Look at the notes you have made on “Of Mice and Men” during your re-reading. Complete the following question, under timed conditions: “In Of  Mice and Men Steinbeck presents some of his characters as being weak in some way. Choose two characters you think are weak. Write about these characters and how they are presented.

Friday 2nd April
35mins: Write the 3 introductions (remember these are approximately 100 word answers to the questions) to the following questions on Of Mice and Men:
  1. Write about two places in the novel which you think are important.
  2. Explore the theme of FRIENDSHIP in the novel.
  3. Many readers feel that the novel is a sad book. To what extent do you agree with this comment?

Saturday 3rd April
35mins: Write the 2 introductions (remember these are approximately 100 word answers to the questions) to the following questions on the Literature poems:
  1. Re-read Sonnet and compare it with one other pre 1914 poem, one Heaney poem and one Clarke poem, which all deal with the idea of personal feelings and how they are conveyed.
  2. Re-read Patrolling Barnegat and compare it with one other pre 1914 poem, one Heaney poem and one Clarke poem, which all make obvious use of both structure and language features to convey their message.
