Week 3
Monday 12th April
45 minutes: Re-read the 2nd four poems in Section A of the poems from “Different Cultures”. For each poem produce a mind map, which has four seperate strands. Use different colours for each strand. Strand 1 = a brief summary of what the poem is about. Strand 2 = key words or phrases from the poem. Strand 3 = key poetry features used - rhyme, structure, similes, narrative voice etc etc. Strand 4 = a list of good poems for comparison and a brief outline of why.
Tuesday 13th April
45 minutes: Write 100 (approx) word answers to the following 3 questions:
- Compare the way structure is used to help convey the poet's "message" in "Two Scavengers..." and one other poem of your choice.
- How does the poet convey the strength of his feelings in "Nothing's Changed"? Compare his methods with those used by another poet to convey their feelings, in a poem of your choice.
- How does "Vultures" convey the darker side of human behaviour? Compare this poem with another that also portrays human behaviour in a negative way.
Wednesday 14th April
45 mins: Choose one of the answers you completed yesterday and extend this into a proper 2 and a half sided response to the question.
Thursday 15th April
30 mins: Re-read your notes on writing to Inform, Explain or Describe. Make a list of the key features you would look to include in a piece of
descriptive writing.
Friday 16th April
45 mins: Answer the following past paper question: "Describe a shopping centre when it is open and describe a shopping centre when it is closed." Aim to write 2 and a half sides.
Saturday 17th April
25 mins: Look back at the answer you wrote yesterday. Place a tick on your work every time you feel you make an effective descriptive point. This might, for example, be the use of a simile or a particular word or it might be the adoption of a particular narrative point of view or the effective use of a short sentence.
Add up your total number of ticks. Now give yourself a mark out of 7 for the accuracy of your piece. What is your total mark?
Sunday 18th April
15 mins: Just look back over all the work you have done for English over the holidays. If appropriate, jot down any questions or concerns you may have, which you can put to your teacher on Tuesday. If you have completed all the given tasks, well done!
Monday 19th April
A well-deserved day off.
