The new school year got off to an exciting start this week with Year 12 and 13 English A level students enjoying a trip to the much-heralded London production of Arthur Miller's "All My Sons". Starring David Suchet and Zoe Wannemaker, it was easy to see why the show's run has been extended, as Miller's tale of family tragedy and social responsibilty gripped the students, for whom this is a set text, from the opening curtain to the final standing ovation. The astonishingly realistic set, so central to many of the play's wider concerns, was the scene for over 2 hours of acting of the highest quality as Miller's script painfully unpicked the lies and hypocrisy lying below the veneer of avuncular bonhomie and neighbourly cheerfulness Joe Keller, the play's protagonist, has worked so hard to develop. The play's final, shocking ending left many of the audience in tears and provided plenty of ammunition for a lively discussion amongst the students on the way back to Hereford and in subsequent lessons.
