Year 11 Christmas 2011 Holiday Work - Mock Preparation

HCS English Department I.G.C.S.E. Website link

In preparation for your mock exams in January - you need to spend some time over the holiday period doing the following:

LITERATURE(2 hour 15 mins exam)
You are allowed to have your actual texts in this exam and you must remember to bring them. In the real exam in May, you will be given BLANK copies.

      Drama

  • Re-read "Death of A Salesman" (Mr Petrie's Group) - look again at your notes on how to write a general Literature Essay and how to tackle an Extract Question (*). Focus your revision on the role and importance of the character of Linda in the play.
  • Re-read "Journey's End" (All other groups) - focus your revision on the characters in the play and their relationships with each other.
      Prose
  • All the groups need to re-read "The Third and Final Continent", "The Taste of Watermelon", "The Yellow Wallpaper", "The Signalman" and "The Lemon Orchard". Focus on what the writers encourage us to feel about the characters in these stories and how they do this.
      Poetry
  • All groups (except Mr Petrie's group) need to go through their poetry anthologies. Remind yourselves of how poets use a variety of techniques to convey and reinforce ideas and images in their poems. Focus your revision on "Marrysong", "The Voice", "Sonnet 29", "Full Moon and Little Frieda", "The Flower-Fed Buffaloes" and "Sonnet 43".

LANGUAGE (2 hour exam)
  • Think about and revise the key techniques needed when writing an interview/conversation.
  • Remind yourselves of the techniques you need to use for ALL 3 questions and what you need to do to get a good grade.
  • Go over you summary writing notes. Remember the need to make at least 20 points, whilst avoiding subjective input and ensuring you use your own words as much as possible.
